30 Years of Making Music
The Piedmont Choral Society, organized in September 1997, is the area's premier community-based mixed-voice choral group. The all-volunteer, auditioned chorus averages 60-80 members and comprises talented singers from all walks of life, many of whom hold professional positions as directors or members of other musical groups and church choirs. The mission of the Piedmont Choral Society is to offer area vocalists a challenging, managed, artistic outlet to provide high-caliber, professional performances of choral masterworks and to use their musical talents to serve the community. The chorus employs a qualified staff consisting of an Artistic Director and an accompanist.
Professional instrumentalists are often engaged for orchestral accompaniment at concerts. PCS is governed by a board of directors, led by an elected president, and relies upon the activities of many volunteer members of the chorus and community. The chorus takes on an ambitious schedule of concerts and services throughout each season, including two Christmas Concerts and two Spring Concerts. In addition to the group’s formal concerts, they perform for local civic special events and in area venues such as churches, nursing homes, and assisted living centers.
In 2004, the group instituted an annual Patriotic Benefit Concert held in late June. Community members are encouraged to join the choir, with no audition and at no cost, for this 3-concert series. Proceeds from one of the concerts are given to a chosen local non-profit organization. Other well-received events include their “Old Fashioned Hymn Sing," accompanied by a canned food drive which has brought in over ½ ton of food through the years, for the Cabarrus Christian Ministry to help feed the hungry. Songs from WWII and a program of love songs have also been presented.
The entire PCS was invited to sing in New York City’s famous Carnegie Hall last November under the direction of well-known composer and director Eric Whitaker. Many members of our group traveled and enjoyed a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
The PCS Chamber Choir was formed to serve as an outreach ensemble for our community. Members of the Chamber Choir are selected each semester by our director from the larger PCS group. The Chamber Choir has performed several fall concerts at area churches this season, with more events scheduled. On December 26, 2025, this group sang at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville as a part of their Christmas Candlelight Tours.
